At Khetiox, we are driven by the vision of creating a self-sufficient and self-sustainable Northeast India. Farmers in this region face market limitations, logistical hurdles, and a lack of expert guidance, making it difficult for them to thrive.
Take Assam, for example—the largest producer of pigs in India, yet production falls short of regional demand. Similarly, fish and eggs are heavily imported from outside the state, despite having ample resources for local production.
Another pressing example is goat farming. 25 years ago, mutton was priced at ₹120 per kg; today, it costs ₹700 per kg. This drastic increase is due to the mass import of poultry chicken from outside states, which made chicken a cheaper alternative and led farmers to abandon goat farming. Most rural households still practice backyard farming, but only for their own consumption, leaving a huge gap between demand and supply.
Farmers hesitate to pursue commercial livestock farming due to unawareness of sudden disease outbreaks. This is true for poultry, goat, and fish farming, where the lack of proper advisory and training often leads to livestock losses.
Landscape
Although Northeast India has a good number of expert veterinarians, accessing them in remote areas with poor connectivity is a major challenge due to the region’s difficult geography, which includes hilly terrains, vast tea estates, and flood-prone areas.
